If your export starts too recently, the analyzer cannot invent the missing years.

Does Unpack My Chat stop at 10,000 messages?

No artificial 10,000-message ceiling exists in the analyzer. The automated test suite parses and analyzes a synthetic 120,000-message history spanning more than 1,000 days and verifies that all messages reach the report.

That test proves the parser has no built-in 10k cutoff. It does not guarantee that WhatsApp will export every historical message or that every low-memory phone can handle arbitrarily large files.

How X-Ray checks whether the export may be incomplete

The report shows the earliest and latest timestamps actually present in the file. It also warns when a ZIP contains media files or when a single source lands near message-count ranges that are commonly seen in shortened exports. Those warnings are deliberately cautious: they mean “older history may be missing”, not “we know the exact WhatsApp limit”.

Why “Without media” is the best first attempt

For chat analysis, photos and videos are unnecessary. Choosing “Without media” keeps the export smaller and gives the text history the best chance of reaching the analyzer without a huge archive getting in the way.

Recover older history with multiple exports

If you have old exports saved in Downloads, Files, Drive or email, add them together. Unpack My Chat merges them locally. Overlap is removed by matching timestamp, sender and exact text, while genuine repeated messages inside a single export are preserved by occurrence count.

How to tell what was actually analyzed

Look at the “messages received”, earliest exported date and latest exported date in the coverage panel. If you personally remember the chat starting earlier than that first date, the missing period was not present in the export and cannot be reconstructed by a browser tool.
