WHATSAPP CHAT STATISTICS

The numbers are easy. Interpreting them honestly is harder.

WhatsApp chat statistics are measurements calculated from an exported conversation. This guide explains how the most useful metrics work and where people often over-interpret them.

Analyse my chatHow to export
Message shareThe percentage of exported messages attributed to each participant.
Conversation startersWho sends the first message after a defined period of silence.
Reply gapThe time between a message and the next message from another sender inside a conversation window.

Message count and share of voice

Message count is the number of parsed messages assigned to each sender. It is useful for describing volume, but short one-word replies and long paragraphs each count as one message.

Average reply gap

WhatsApp X-Ray measures reply timing only when the sender changes within an active session window. Long offline gaps are treated separately so a night of sleep does not become a twelve-hour “reply time.” Even then, reply timing should not be treated as a measure of affection or attention.

Conversation starters

A conversation starter is the participant who sends the first message after a defined quiet gap. This creates a more useful signal than counting every sender switch as a new conversation.

Longest silence and returns

A silence is simply a gap between exported messages. It cannot tell you why the gap happened. Return statistics count activity after a long gap; they do not infer reconciliation or conflict.

Words, phrases and emoji

Text frequency can reveal the vocabulary of a chat. Common stop words are filtered so distinctive words appear more clearly. Phrase matches describe repetition, not emotional meaning. Emoji counts are literal character counts from the export.

Media and deleted-message markers

A text export may contain placeholders such as omitted media, photo markers, voice-note markers or deleted-message notices. The analyser can count markers that are actually present, but it cannot reconstruct missing media or deleted content.
